Christian Marclay’s 24-hour video piece, The Clock, is showing at Paula Cooper Gallery in New York for its US premiere. For this work, Marclay compiled thousands of film excerpts that reference the passage of time through glances at wristwatches, shots of clocks, the sound of alarms, and time-specific dialogue. Using these clips, he created a 24-hour montage that unfolds in real time when synchronized with the local time of the exhibiting gallery. The momentum, elegance, and surreal boundlessness of the piece dissolves any conclusions that might be drawn from the idea of watching time go by. The Clock creates an experience for the viewer that hovers somewhere between giddy exhilaration and dumbstruck captivation – it’s near impossible to walk away.
