Marni Kotak’s current installation at Microscope Gallery might be a labour of love, or it might just be labour. The 36 year-old performance artist is eight months pregnant, and plans to give birth in front of an audience at the Brooklyn gallery where she’s taken up residence. According to Kotak’s midwife she could go into labor at any second, though the The Birth of Baby X installation is scheduled to run from October 8-November 7.

Kodak told the New York Post: “I hope that people will see that human life is the most profound work of art, and that therefore giving birth, the greatest expression of life is the highest form of art.”

And what will become of little Baby X after the installation closes? Kotak’s next project, Raising Baby X, will “re-contextualizes the everyday act of raising a child into a work of performance art.” Here’s looking (and looking and looking and looking) at you, kid.
