Grace Cathedral is an iconic place of worship because beyond the elaborate labyrinth gardens, beautifully stained glass windows and sturdy French-Gothic buttresses is true sacred space committed to the advancement and celebration of humanity . The cathedral has served as a backdrop to political mavens such as Martin Luther King as well silver screen legends like Steve McQueen.
In recent years Grace Cathedral has become a destination worthy of pilgrimage for art and music devotees. In 2012, the cathedral launched an artist in residence program with noted actress and playwright Anne Deavere Smith. Currently, Anne Patterson, a visual artist who works in music and theater, has taken the reigns as resident artist. Patterson's site specific instillation features 20 miles of colorful ribbons suspended from the vaulted ceilings. Graced with Light is a symbolic representation of grace and embodies the connection between heaven and earth. Incorporating light and shadow and accompanied daily by a selection of recorded arrangements or renowned live musical guest, each visit is a unique experience.
