The art collection of the late Dennis Hopper goes to auction next week at Christie’s. The collection is being sold by Hopper’s four children in accordance with their father’s wishes. The January 11-January 12 sale will feature works on paper by such notables as Gerhard Richter, Julian Schnabel, Sophie Calle, David Salle, Cindy Sherman, Ed Ruscha, Bruce Connor, and Claes Oldenburg. The group also includes portraits of Hopper taken by Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz, and Helmut Lang.

Dennis Hopper began collecting art in the 1960s after the actor Vincent Price, an already developed collector, suggested art as a good way to invest his money. Hopper was also an artist himself and soon became ingratiated in the West Coast art scene, forging close friendships with people like Warhol, Lichtenstein, and many of the other artists he collected.

The auction next week will include close to 300 items. To view the collection, www.christies.com (lots 1-242).
