Photographer Helmut Newton (German, 1920 - 2004) is most famous for his work as a fashion photographer. During his career, Newton created provocative work for Vogue magazine, Elle and Playboy. Born in 1920 to a Jewish family in Berlin, Newton received his first camera at age 12. Newton first became enamored with the female nude a a photographic subject as a teenager while working as an apprentice to theater photographer Else Neulander.
From 1940 to 1945 Newton served in the Australian Army. After settling in Sydney he met, and in 1948, married the photographer and actress June Browne, also known as Alice Springs. Her collaborative affect on Helmut were substantial to his career.
In 1957 the Newton's moved to Paris and opened up a photography studio. As his talent, style and reputation grew, Newton began traveling the world on assignments. He quickly became known as a trailblazer in the fashion photography world, exploring power and gender roles in his photographs. He was also noted for his dramatic use of lighting and for his unconventional posing of models. Newton's work has been characterized as obsessive and subversive, often using themes of prostitution, violence and sadomasochism.
Newton continued to travel later in life, dividing his time between Monte Carlo and Los Angeles. In January 2003, Newton died after his car sped out of control from the driveway of the Chateau Marmont hotel and crashed into a wall. He was 84 years old.
